Background: Katherine was born in the city of New York to Joseph and Maria Brynes. Joseph worked as a detective for the police and Maria worked as a nurse at a local hospital. Both Joseph and Maria were immigrants from Europe, he coming from Ireland and she from England, and believed in having a strong work ethic and that no dream is impossible. Sadly, Maria died from influenza when Katherine was only five leaving Joseph to raise their daughter alone. Joseph was a loving father and despite the increasing demands of his job found time for his daughter. He taught her to never compromise her morals or beliefs for any reason and that she could do anything she put her mind to.

Katerine grew up to become a self-confident and independent woman with a slight tomboyish flair. One of her favorite pastimes as a kid was to play baseball with the neighborhood boys. Besides baseball another of her joys in life was science. She read everything she could on the subject and would often tell her dad random facts she'd learn over dinner. He would laugh and encourage her to learn more but the kids at school weren't as ethusiastic. They bullied and mocked her for it until Kat gave them a knuckled sandwich showing them that she was fully capable of defending herself.

One year after Kat graduated from highschool, Joseph was investigating a smuggling ring run by a local mobster. The mob caught wind of his investigations and offered him a bribe to turn a blind eye to their business. He flatly refused and more so promised that he would stop them at all cost. In response, the mob sent a hitman and he was killed three days after the attempted proposition. Katherine was distraught over the death of her beloved father but with his investigation ended with his death there wasn't much hope of bringing his murderers to justice. Instead, she resolved to do what her father always wanted her to do which was to continue to learn science. Katherine went on to college and got her doctorate in Biochemistry.

However, even after receiving her doctorate, Katherine found it hard to find work. Most universities and labs were adamant on the fact that they would not hire a woman. When things seem almost hopeless, Kat got a letter asking her to join a special society made up of the world's most elite intellectuals, scientists, and artists. She jumped at the chance and within a few weeks was looking out the window of a bathysphere seeing for the first time the underwater city that would become her new home. Katherine loved her new home but found to her misfortune that the discrimination she faced on the surface didn't diminished even a couple leagues beneath the sea.

Once again when things seemed hopeless, Katherine found a helping hand. Fontaine Futuristics offerd her a job in finding ways to make plasmids more efficently intergrate with the body. She was estatic about her new position and felt nothing but graditude toward Fontaine Futuristics for offering her a job when others wouldn't. However, despite her gratitude she couldn't help but notice the rumors about Fontaine's smuggling and other illicit activities. She felt torn between anger and replusion over her employer's less than clean record and realization that this was the only job she would probably ever get in the city. She accepted the position but still feels like she's betraying the morals her dad taught her.
